A Coruña already has winners of the first classes of the CSI 5*W
Michael Pender and Hans-Dieter Dreher won the Ca-ser Grupo Helvetia Trophy and the Caixabank Trophy. Spaniard Jesús Garmendia was the second fastest rider in both classes
Those attending the Casas Novas Equestrian Center were able to witness this Friday afternoon, December 6, the first class of the highest category of this prestigious International Show Jumping Competition, which is part of the World Jumping Cup.
The 5* category began at 18:15 in the afternoon with the Caser Grupo Helvetia Trophy, a time trial without tiebreaker with heights of 1.45m, in which we could see 57 riders jumping in the indoor arena of Casas Novas, among which were some of the best riders of the moment.
In this first round, the Irish rider Michael Pender, second in the FEI U-25 ranking, managed to win after a faultless time of 58.82 seconds with his horse HHs Vancouver.
The second place of the test was achieved by a great known of the national equestrian public, the Basque rider Jesús Garmendia, who stopped the clock in 60.44 seconds in a great ride with Valut 2.
The podium was completed by the Swiss Edouard Schmitz, the young 25-year-old rider who was only 10 hundredths of a second behind the second classified, obtaining a time of 60.54 seconds accompanied by Abdul-Jabbar du Gibet.
At 21:15 the most awaited class of the first day took place, the Caixabank Trophy, an exciting 1.50m high course in which 47 riders took part.
Hans-Dieter Dreher was the main protagonist of the first day in this new edition of the CSI 5*W A Coruña after completing the Caixabank Trophy in a time of 62.33 seconds. The experienced German rider managed to be the fastest of the test accompanied by Vestmalle des Cotis.
The second place in the 5* category on this first day had a name and surname, as Jesús Garmendia was again the second fastest rider for the second time in a row, with a time of 63.23 seconds, this time with Callias.
After starting in first place, French rider Simon Delestre remained on the podium throughout the entire race, taking third place by closing the course with Dexter Fontenis Z in 63.49 seconds.
After an exciting first day of competition, the pace does not stop at the Casas Novas Equestrian Center, which will host a new day of top-level horse racing this Saturday, December 7, with two tests of the CSi 1* and two more of the CSI 5*W.
The second date of the competition will start with the CSI 1* tests, at 13:30 the Porsche Trophy, in heights of 1,30m, and at 16:00 the Leblond Lenoir Trophy, in heights of 1,40m.
The Marqués de Riscal Trophy will open the second day of the CSI 5*W from 18:00, with heights of 1.50m, in a time trial without tiebreaker, in a test that will serve as a starter before the main course of the day. The Longines Grand Prix, which we can enjoy from 20:30, with heights of 1.55m with tiebreaker.
